Day 1.

This week (maybe all of this month, who knows) I’m going to be focussing on character continuity. Ideally some of these would be more fully rendered, but this’ll do as a beginning.

Goal: be able to create a character and then draw them with any expression from any angle so that they’re easily recognisable.

Today: I actually started by spending a lot of time drawing from reference photos this morning, and analysing my own previous work to find strengths and weaknesses. After that I just started sketching and I liked this kid’s first face so I tried to draw him 4 more times. I had trouble trying to keep him the same age, I feel like I’ve made him a couple different ages here, but mostly this felt like a good start.

Today: Well I spent a lot of time drawing from reference again today. And then I spent a lot of time distracted by researching African American illustrators (and then falling into the archives of Sean Qualls and Frank Morrison). All this to say… there are only two pictures. I did actually sketch another 3 but they were all disastrous and didn’t look like her at all. We continue.

Today: I have other things I need to get done today, so I did this early and quickly(ish). Anyway, I seem to be making a troupe of… 12 year olds? That’s the age I’m kinda aiming at, and maybe I’m getting ball park. We live and learn.
